An analysis of observational data on the F1 layer obtained by ionosphere sounding in the latitude range 32 deg S - 27 deg N in the Atlantic indicates greater seasonal changes in the thermosphere in January 1971, during transition over the equator, than those predicted by the models. At the same time, the calculations based on modern models of the thermosphere are in good general agreement with the observational results.
