We propose a 76~ks (one complete orbital cycle) Chandra-HETGS observation of the dipping X-ray binary 4U~1624--490. This long observation will provide a much more complete picture of 4U~1624--490 by allowing us to (1) probe the accretion flow and accretion disk corona via emission and absorption line spectroscopy, (2) study the disk composition and to test partial covering models via binary orbital phase-resolved edge spectroscopy, (3) look for and assess dust features, and (4) measure and model the (variable) dust scattering halo. The full 76~ks is necessary for adequately resolving subtle spectral features, and tracking variability in the dust scattering halo.
