Deep CCD images at 0.7 and 0.9 μm polarimetry at 0.9 μm of the field around the protostellar source NGC 7538/IRS 9 are presented. Two sources of diffuse continuum emission separated by a dark lane are found near the young stellar object. The polarization vectors all center to a position near IRS 9, demonstrating that the two diffuse emission regions are reflection nebulae illuminated by a source near or at the position of IRS 9. NGC 7538/IRS 9 itself is not detected at a limiting I magnitude of 23.5 mag. The extinction in the line of sight to the infrared source is estimated by different methods to be at least Av > 25.4 mag. A new double star surrounded by a reflection nebula has been discovered and probably represents another young object in the NGC 7538 molecular cloud.
