It is proposed that the jet observed in the giant spheroidal galaxy M87 is formed by compact clouds of magnetized plasma with a mass of about 1 solar mass flowing out from the galactic nucleus at relativistic velocities. The 'one-sided' appearance of the jet is explained in terms of the relativistic Doppler effect. The angular extent of individual jet condensations and a spectral parameter are estimated on the basis of energetic and dynamical considerations, and the jet's synchrotron spectrum is analyzed. An evaluation of the deceleration of jet 'knots' by the ambient plasma indicates that such deceleration could be a heat source for the intergalactic gas. Some general questions of activity in galactic nuclei are briefly discussed in the light of the results obtained.
