We present a detailed study of Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z = 3.1 and 5.7. Using multiwavelength observations, we constrain the stellar populations of LAEs with the goal of gaining insights into the nature and evolution of these objects. We investigate the properties of 162 LAEs at z = 3.1 in ECDF-S. The majority of the z = 3.1 LAEs in our sample are young and low-mass with masses 108 M&sun; and ages 200 Myr. However, there is also a significant fraction of older ( 1 Gyr) and more massive ( 1010 M&sun;) objects. The fact that Lyα emission is seen in both young and evolved galaxies implies that the Lyα luminous phase of galaxies can be recurrent or long-lasting. We also study the stellar populations of LAEs at z = 5.7 using a spectroscopic sample of 40 LAEs in HDFN/SSA22 and a photometric sample of 111 LAEs from the COSMOS survey. The z = 5.7 LAEs in our sample appear to be rather massive with typical masses 5×109 M&sun;. While the high observed stellar mass may be the result of selection effects, we demonstrate additional evidence of an evolution in the LAEs from the star formation rate density and stellar mass density. Our results suggest a possible evolution of LAEs towards higher mass with redshift, potentially due to the increasing prevalence of Lyα emission as a result of the lower overall dust content in high-redshift galaxies.
