An imaging double Compton telescope for low energy gamma-ray astronomy between 1 to 20 MeV is presently being developed and will be flown for the first time on a balloon in the autumn of 1977. The telescope consists of two mosaic type detectors, the upper one consisting of liquid scintillator NE 213, the lower one of NaI(T1). A gamma-ray is identified by a Compton collision in the upper detector and second interaction in the lower one, which is 1.20 m apart. This sequence is confirmed by a time-of-flight measurement. The properties of the telescope are presented: its energy and angular resolution and its detection efficiency. Its sensitivity for the detection of localized gamma-ray sources and of gamma-ray lines in their energy spectra during a balloon flight is presented.
