Powerful radio-emitting galaxies that existed when the universe was only one tenth its present age of about 15 billion years are considered. Loud radio emission of these galaxies is caused by the energetic processes taking place near an extremely massive collapse object, a black hole with a billion times the mass of the sun. The most distant galaxies known were located by homing in on radio signals from these objects which are so remote that it had taken their radiation billions of years to reach the earth. The most youthful active galaxies differ from their older, more proximate relatives thus offering clues about how massive galaxies form and evolve and providing insight into the origin of the universe.
