In the context of speculation on the prevalence of intelligent life in other solar systems, it is suggested that the history of the cosmically unique earth-moon system may have fortuitously produced the environment required for biogenesis, and hastened subsequent biological evolution. Among the important physical processes which are factors in biogenesis and evolution, and affected by lunar tides, are plate techtonics and continental drift, earthquakes, volcanism and other geothermal activity, atmospheric composition and circulation, and the development of monthly and circalunadian biological rhythms in many organisms. It is noted that the diversification of species is probably aided by the isolation of gene pools associated with the drifting of continental plates, as well as by the creation of a diversity of ecological environments through topographical transformations.
