The search for the high redshift tail of the population of massive galaxies with extreme star formation rates of 1000 solar masses per year has recently resulted in spectroscopic confirmation of a few such objects at redshifts greater than 4. This galaxy population which has been first identified via their strong sub-millimeter continuation (i.e. sub-millimeter galaxies, SMGs) is thought to be the progenitor of massive elliptical galaxies. For the first time, follow-up observations of one such system detected in the COSMOS field at z=4.5 were possible and showed that its molecular gas and dust content is very similar to that of the well-studied SMG population at redshift 2: a molecular gas reservoir of 3e6 solar masses, a CO line width of about 1000 km/s and an implied dynamical mass of 1.1e11 solar masses. Thus this system could potentially evolve into a massive early-type galaxy at redshift 2. Here we describe our results on this objects as well as our going efforts to study more such systems.
