The use of the solar H I Lyman spectral line as a diagnostic of the
lower to middle chromosphere is discussed. Quiet sun Lyman profiles from
the photographic spectra were subjected to data reduction and
appropriate theoretical modelling was accomplished. Apollo telescope
mount data was utilized.
