A model is devised for the object SS 433 to fit the observed radial-velocity curve of the moving emission lines better than does Abell and Margon's kinematic model. SS 433 is taken to be a close binary system of orbital period P2 = 13d, comprising an optical star and a neutron star surrounded by a gaseous accretion disk precessing with a period P1 = 164d. The magnetic dipole axis of the rapidly spinning neutron star is normal to the rotation axis. Relativistic particles stream out of the megnetic poles and strip a pair of gas jets from the accretion disk. The physical processes that should operate in such a system are discussed and several predictions of observable phenomena are made
