In this paper we have attempted, within sampling limitations, to carry out a systematic study of an ancient shale formation which has been influenced by metamorphic factors. The analyses suggest that the chemical transformations of the kerogen involve progressive cyclization, leading, on the one hand, to the formation of highly condensed aromatic, systems and, on the other hand, to the formation of gaseous products, mainly methane. Among the metamorphic factors, it appears that temperature is the most effective. The disproportionation process seems to have involved pyrolytic reactions, probably catalyzed by clay minerals and aided by the pressure of the overlying rocks.
