The model by Press and Schechter for the mass function of clusters of point masses in an Einstein-de Sitter universe is modified by dropping their assumption of uniform protoclusters. This modification of the model is shown to be necessary, and the modification appears to provide better agreement with the shape of the mass function obtained from N-body simulations. The assumption of an Einstein-de Sitter universe in the original model is also relaxed to the assumption of any Friedmann-Lemaitre universe with a zero cosmological constant. Discussion of the mass function of galaxy clusters is presented with an application of the modified model.
