The Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS), on board the ESA Mars Express spacecraft, has been in orbit about Mars and commissioned for operation since 14 August 2005. Between commissioning and 31 August 2009, MARSIS has sampled the Martian ionosphere at solar zenith angles greater than 110° out to 140° approximately 4300 times on about 300 orbits. Visual inspection of these sample ionograms reveals that approximately 10% have an ionospheric reflection. These ionospheres can occur in regions of high, low, or no remanent magnetic field. When they are in the presence of a remanent field, the ionosphere appears to prefer a cusp-like region, in which the field is changing direction with respect to the surface of the planet; however, determination of the relationship of the night-side ionosphere to the remanent field will require further analysis.
