The instruments that make up the Mars Observer science payload are examined. The mission's scientific goals for studying the geological and meteorological characteristics of Mars are outlined. The Mars Observer instruments include the gamma-ray spectrometer, the magnetometer/electron reflectometer, the Mars Observer camera, the Mars Observer laser altimeter, the pressure modulator IR radiometer, the thermal emission spectrometer, the ultrastable oscillator. The mechanical configurations and functional characteristics of each of these instruments are discussed.
