In strictly popular fashion the article tries to give an idea of the tremendous accuracies involved in the guidance of the Vikings Mars probes by radar across millions of km of interplanetary space. It is mentioned that the position of the Viking probe was known to within 5 meters, and that the signal transmitted from the probe upon reaching the earth amounted to 2 times 10 to the minus 21 watts. The text is supplemented with fourteen Mars photographs, including some photomosaics of extended areas of Martian terrain.
