The consortium for Galactic studies with the Arecibo L-band Feed Array (GALFA) has imaged an area of approximately 1125 square degrees at tip of the Magellanic Stream, the region located furthest away from the parent Magellanic Clouds.
For the first time, four distinct filaments or branches of the Stream are revealed, each with their own respective large-scale structure, morphologies and velocity gradients. We compare spatial and velocity structure of the four streams with numerical simulations and find support for the tidal origin of the Magellanic Stream.
We have also produced a catalog of 176 discrete HI clouds in the Stream, revealed by our high-resolution observations. Most of these clouds are small, with a characteristic angular size of 10 arcmin. Most importantly, about one fifth of the clouds present in this region show complex velocity profiles indicative of the multi-phase medium.
