The 1861 review article on cometary astronomy by Daniel Kirkwood
(1814-1895) is re-examined. In spite of several recent claims to the
contrary, we find that Kirkwood was in no manner responsible for the
fundamental advancement that demonstrated a causal relationship between
meteoroid streams and comets.
