Representative samples have been taken through the Mansfield Marine Band, and into strata above and below it, from a borehole penetrating Westphalian Coal Measures at Little Smeaton, Yorkshire. The major element geochemistry has been related to the mineralogy and the important control of the detrital fraction on the major element geochemistry has been recognized. Whilst sorbtion occurs, it is less important as a means of incorporating major elements into the sediment than the diagenetic minerals. The major element distributions have been used, in conjunction with information from other sources, in an attempt to further the understanding of the depositional environment of the rocks studied.
