A mechanism for the maintenance of the magnetic fields of planets, stars, and galaxies is postulated. It appears that cyclonic convection and nonuniform rotation within the liquid metal cores of planets, the convective zones of stars, and the gaseous disks of galaxies provide an efficient dynamo mechanism for the production of these fields. The dominant field within the body is azimuthal, produced by nonuniform rotation from the poloidal field. The interaction of cyclonic convection within the azimuthal field produces loops of flux in meridional planes whose net effect is a meridional circulation of field in the same sense as the original poloidal field. Both stationary and oscillatory fields can be generated in this way.
