The oblique rotator model with axisymmetric magnetic fields containing a toroidal component is adopted for describing the magnetic variations observed in Ap stars. The toroidal component is taken as a nonlinear function of the poloidal component stream function. A method is outlined for determining, from He and Hs observations, the parameters that describe the surface distribution of the magnetic field components. This method is successfully applied to the magnetic observations of HD 215441; it reveals the existence of different magnetic field surface structures that represent equally well the observations. The principal characteristics of the different solutions are discussed.
