Simultaneous measurements of magnetic fields near Mars on the daytime and nighttime sides (Mars-2), in the free solar wind (Mars-3), and data on the dynamic pressure of the solar wind (IMP-6) are compared. The observed field topology is compared with the field topology near Venus and the 'draped' magnetosphere model, corresponding to the observed IMF (Mars-3). It is demonstrated that Mars has an intrinsic magnetic field with a magnetic moment exceeding 1.5 x 10 to the 22nd G cu cm, which is an effective barrier to the solar wind. It is found that, for a polar-cap width of 45 deg, the Mars magnetotail can extend to 90 Mars radii.
