Magnetic fabric (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility) measurements have been made on mudstones of Paleocene to Eocene age from the southwest margin of the Rockall Plateau. These sediments are from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sites 403, 404, and 405 and were cored by D/V ``Glomar Challenger'' during Leg 48. Non-horizontal magnetic foliation planes in these sediments are interpreted as representing paleoslopes. At sites 403 and 404, a deltaic sequence is identified as having prograded towards the southeast or east, indicating that it was derived from Greenland rather than Rockall. This can be confirmed from other geological evidence and from paleo-geographic reconstructions. Southerly dipping depositional surfaces have been identified in a submarine fan complex at site 405, in agreement with interpretation of seismic reflection records. This supports the view that this fan has been built out southwards from the east-west trending transform fault scarp which controls the Rockall margin in this area.
