A new model based on possible contamination of the data of Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Cepheids by bright companions is presented. The model explains the blueness of the SMC Cepheids relative to the galactic Cepheids, accounts for the ultraviolet excess of the SMC Cepheids, and explains that the colors differ appreciably at minimum light. The effects on the color-color curves of Cepheids when companion stars are added are described, and the probability of finding a bright star in the field of view when observing SMC and galactic Cepheids is discussed. The effects of bright stars on the P-L and ridge-line relations for galactic Cepheids are compared to the relations for the SMC Cepheids. It is concluded that the proposed model accounts for the observed differences between the galactic Cepheids and those of the SMC.
