We present photometry and spectroscopy of an unusual transient, Y-155, discovered during the ESSENCE supernova search. The ESSENCE project discovered and studied more than 200 type Ia supernovae over a 6-year search with the goal of placing constraints on cosmological parameters. The light curve of Y-155 shows a rapid rise to a maximum of R=21.2 mag on the time-scale of 30 days in the observed frame. The R-I color index decreases over time indicating that the transient turns blue as it approaches peak brightness. Three epochs of spectroscopy confirm an increase in the blue continuum and show rapid variability in broad absorption features. A narrow absorption doublet is detected in all the spectra and we identify it as Mg II 2796/2803. This places the transient at a redshift of z=0.797 or greater and implies a peak absolute magnitude of MB < -21.3 mag (no correction for host extinction). The expansion velocities implied by the by the broad absorption features are consistent with some supernovae. There is no direct evidence for hydrogen in the spectrum, but a strong rest-frame UV continuum develops which is inconsistent with type I events. If the light curve is powered by radioactive nickel, we estimate a total nickel yield of 6 Solar masses (for a redshift of 0.8). This is consistent with the pair instability explosion of a star with an initial mass of 200 Solar masses.
