The luminosity function of a complete sample of 176 Virgo cluster galaxies is derived. The 160 cluster members with known redshift yield a mean radial velocity of 967 + or - 53 km/sec with a dispersion of 668 km/sec. The Schechter function, used to approximate the empirical luminosity distribution, is discussed. The best solutions are fitted to 11 subsamples of different morphological types, and a maximum-likelihood method is used to find the best luminosity function parameters. The Schechter type luminosity function gives values of the parameters beta -0.25 and the absolute characteristic magnitude -21.3 m, which are in good agreement with the parameters of other clusters. These parameters differ considerably, however, for several morphological subsamples, particularly for the E and SO galaxies. These differences can be reduced for some samples if magnitude corrections for internal absorption are applied.
