The results of a study into the nature of the luminosity distributions of edge-on spiral and lenticular galaxies are presented. To this end, a procedure for self-consistent deconvolution of the observed luminosity profiles into their component parts has been constructed, and the results of its application to observational data for 15 galaxies of widely varying bulge to disc ratios, supplemented by two additional candidates from the literature, described. Evidence is presented of the extent to which the galaxies studied here depart from a normal morphology, and the implications for the applicability of traditional population deconvolution techniques addressed. In particular, the existence and possible nature of intermediate components are analyzed and the results obtained are used to place constraints on current schemes of galaxy formation. In the light of those galaxies studied which show clear evidence of box and peanut shaped bulge isophotes, the results of a systematic, all-sky search of such systems are also presented and their implications for current formation histories outlined.
