We present a study of the low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) in a large sample of elliptical galaxies and probe the link between LMXBs and globular clusters (GC). GCs have long been known to be particularly efficient breeding grounds for X-ray binaries in the Milky Way, but the substantially larger number of clusters in ellipticals, and the large range of GC properties sampled in these galaxies make them ideal for analyzing the formation and evolution of LMXBs.
Our analysis reveals that roughly half of the LMXBs in ellipticals are associated with globular clusters, preferentially the brightest GCs, and that as in the Galaxy clusters are several orders of magnitude more efficient at forming LMXBs due to dynamical interactions. However, our analysis of the Sculptor dwarf galaxy suggests that this overabundance of LMXBs in clusters may be restricted to bright LMXBs, which predicts interesting consequences for LMXBs in the Milky Way.
Our large data set definitively shows that LMXBs in ellipticals are preferentially associated with metal-rich GCs. The exact functional form of the relationship has significant implication both on the formation of LMXBs in clusters and the formation history of GCs themselves. It has been suggested that field LMXBs may be an escaped GC population. Our combined X-ray optical data set reveals that the field LMXBs in ellipticals are likely formed in situ and not ejected into the field due to cluster dynamical effects.
