Simulation and experimental results indicate that the main ionospheric trough has a convective origin and that universal-time effects lead to the appearance of longitudinal asymmetry; other words, the appearance of this asymmetry is determined by the UT-dependence of the structure of magnetospheric convection, associated with the noncoincidence of geomagnetic and geographic poles. The longitudinal asymmetry is more marked in solar minimum years, which is probably associated with the fact that intense corpuscular precipitations obscure the pattern in solar maximum years.
