1-Theoretical basis : This first part of a series of papers on conspicuous orbits is an historical survey, from Kepler to Einstein, of different theories of gravitation implemented for the description of the motion of several bodies in gravitational interaction.
2-The restricted three bodies problem : The restricted 3 body problem ( 2 massive bodies and one body with a neglectable mass in 2D ), was intensively studied by algebra. Numeric computation allows to describe a very large number of systems . One dozen of these systems, selected for their typical constitution, are graphically presented.
3-The three bodies problem and some related cases : The basic systems with 3 massive bodies were discovered by Lagrange (equilateral configuration) and by Euler (colinear configuration) utilising classical algebra. Polygonal and pyramidal configurations appear as consequences of the equilateral configuration. Symmetry is the fundamental component of all systems based upon the equilateral configuration: numerical modelisation must be adjusted in order not to deteriorate the symmetry during each step of computation.
