In view of the substantial discrepancies which are present among published estimates of the radio luminosity function of galaxies, the authors present a new determination exploiting the four richest radio and optically selected samples. Survival analysis techniques are used to fully take into account the radio upper limits. The four samples yield results in excellent agreement with each other. At the same time the luminosity ranges most thoroughly covered by each of them are largely complementary, thus allowing an accurate definition of the luminosity function over six decades of radio power. The authors also present a new estimate of the local luminosity function of "flat"-spectrum sources, reasonably well defined over a range in power greater than 104.
