Mean curves of polarization variations over the precession period P = 164 d are derived from observations in 1979-1982 and the published data. According to the analysis of the curves, the first harmonic is dominating, in contradiction with the existing theoretical models of polarization variations. UBVRI polarimetric data suggest a value of about 4.7 percent for the interstellar polarization of SS 433, which is larger than the average observed polarization. This yields a direction of the average intrinsic polarization approximately orthogonal to the interstellar polarization and parallel to the direction of the radio jets. Such a polarization could arise from scattering by matter concentrated approximately to the orbital plane. Evidence is found for orbitally phase locked polarization variations which are in agreement with such a preliminary model.
