In order to interpret recent observations of spatially resolved emission-line profiles in Herbig-Haro object HH 1, the position-dependent H-beta profile for a model of a bow shock around a spherical body has been calculated using an approximate theory which leads to a hyperbolic bow shock. A theoretical 'position-velocity' map with a shock velocity of 350 km/s is derived for H-beta using Cox's (1972) derivation of H-beta line flux in a plane shock geometry. The corresponding observational map agrees surprisingly well with the theoretical predictions. The observations show that, in spite of its 'condensation structure' HH 1 shows a 'position-velocity' map of a simple bow shock directed away from the Cohen-Schwartz star, as would be expected for an 'interstellar bullet' model.
