The problem of the lifetime of a metastable atomic state in a
nonequilibrium plasma is presented. A region of parameters is obtained
in which metastability breakdown by the Langmuir turbulence spectrum is
a very important agent capable of leading to observed effects under
laboratory and astrophysical conditions.
