This review summarizes the role of gaseous carbon in the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM) as a tracer of its different phases and as a primary gas coolant. Carbon in one of its many gaseous atomic and molecular forms has proven to be critical to our ability to trace the chemical and physical states of the cloud. This review covers the important role that Professor Tom Phillips has played in the study of key carbon species in the ISM.
