As they have done in the past several years, the Leonids attracted a lot of interest in 2003 following the forecast by Robert McNaught and David Asher, among others, of further outbursts of enhanced activity close to November 19d 04h 00m and 19d 10h 30m UT. Storm-level activity seen in 2001 at previous encounters with the same debris trails (ejected from comet 55P/Tempel(Tuttle in 1799 and 1866 respectively) heightened the expectation that good activity would ensue in 2003.
