None of the coronal mass ejection (CME) launches presently studied coincide with a flare onset; those flares which do occur in the vicinity of a CME launch site do so after the CME onset, and in one foot of the CME structure. Weak X-ray activity is associated with the footpoints of the CME structures, and these indicate the presence of large coronal structures underlying the CME structures. X-ray enhancements are found after all of the CME onsets, and are in some cases sufficiently bright to be classified as flares; in others, they are taken to be lesser, 'subflare' brightenings.
