The effects on the ionosphere of changes in neutral composition and equatorward winds generated in the high-latitude thermosphere during periods of high magnetic activity are investigated. Calculations of diurnal variations in ionospheric parameters under quiet and disturbed conditions at solar minimum in the summer and winter at geographic latitudes of 45, 55 and 65 deg are performed using the model of the neutral atmosphere of Jacchia (1977), and compared with a self-consistent calculation of temperature, density and wind disturbances in the thermosphere. The disturbances in the meridional velocity of the thermospheric winds obtained according to the Jacchia model (25-250 m/sec) at Kp = 6 are noted to differ significantly from those obtained in the self-consistent calculation (150-350 m/sec), which are of a sufficient magnitude to compensate for or exceed the negative effects of changes in neutral composition on ionospheric electron density.
