The largest crater on the face of the moon is shown to be the Schiller Annular Plain (SAP), which is located 160 km outside the wall of Bailly and is 11% larger than that crater, with an outer ring 340 km across and a concentric inner ring of 180 km. The morphology of the SAP is described in detail, particularly the secondary craters, crater chains, and lineations produced by subsequent impacts. Other lunar formations similar to the SAP are noted, and it is concluded that the SAP has the distinction of being the only typical thalassoid (double-ringed formation), as well as the largest crater, on the face of the moon.
