Maps of the total and polarized intensity of the remarkably edge-darkened FR I-type radio galaxies 3C31 and 3C449, among them the first polarization maps covering the entire sources at 4.75 GHz and the inner regions at 10.7 GHz, are presented. The first flux density measurements at 32 GHz are given. The physical properties of the outer extended lobes are studied in detail. For both 3C31 and 3C449, spectral comparisons are made over the entire source extent between 0.4, 2.7, and 4.75 GHz at 4.5-arcmin resolution, and also for the inner regions up to 32 GHz at 2.5-arcmin resolution. From the fact that the radio spectra along the major axes of the sources steepen progressively with core distance it is inferred that the electrons in the outer lobes have suffered strong energy losses. A summary of the integrated flux densities of the two radio galaxies and of their cores, based on published data, is presented, as well as information for the field radio sources detected on the present maps.
