The observed peculiar velocities of galaxies provide the main direct evidence for the dynamics of matter on large scales, which can constrain theory independently of galaxy "biasing". I first describe reconstruction methods focusing on the POTENT procedure which recovers the three dimensional velocity field assuming a potential flow and then determines the underlying mass-density field. I then report on several efforts to confront theory and observation: (a) A correlation between the mass and the IRAS galaxy density, both featuring the Great Attractor (GA) phenomenon. The comparison yields Omega^0.6/b_I = 1.35+/-0.25, where b_I is the biasing factor for IRAS galaxies. Non-linear analysis favors Omega approxeq b_I approxeq 1 but low values of Omega are also possible provided that the galaxies are severely anti-biased. (b) The shape of the mass fluctuation power spectrum in the wavelength range 10 - 100 h^-1 Mpc is consistent with an initially scale-invariant spectrum modified by Cold Dark Matter (CDM). (c) The probability distributions of density and velocity reflect the initial distributions. The data by POTENT and by IRAS are consistent with Gaussian initial fluctuations.
