A study of the relations between large dimensionless numbers leads to the conclusion that G, expressed in atomic units, varies with the epoch; however, the Einstein theory requires G to be constant. These two requirements can be reconciled by supposing that the Einstein theory applies with a metric that differs from the atomic metric. This approach results in the Einstein-de Sitter (ES) model of the universe. The static Schwarzschild metric has to be modified to fit with the ES model for large r; with this modification it is shown that there should be an inward spiralling of the planets, referred to atomic units, superposed on the motion given by ordinary gravitational theory
