A review is given of radio astronomy efforts to understand the central region of the Galaxy. The discovery of a hot optically thin molecular hydrogen ring around the Galactic nucleus provides the first good opportunity of ascertaining whether the velocity field in the central region of the Galaxy is approximately axially symmetric. In addition, it is possible to deduce the absolute value of the noncircular component of the LSR motion from the systemic velocity of the ring.
