An extensive Jurassic-Cretaceous volcanism was recognized in the section of the Patagonian Cordillera situated between the 43° and 47°S parallels. Field observations and K-Ar geochronological determinations allowed to obtain a complete picture of the events that occured in the region. The volcanic activity started with andesitic pyroclastics with some dacitic intercalations in the Malm and continued until the Late Jurassic. Tithonian-Neocomian marine sediments in some areas point out a partial regional subsidence. In the Early Cretaceous, the volcanic activity was mainly andesitic, with some interbedded dacites in the upper part of the sequence, and intercalations of pyroclastic beds and clastic sediments. The calc-alkaline volcanics are associated to granitic and granodioritic plutons, and together characterize a volcanic arc on a continental margin.
