Compact formulas and FORTRAN subprograms are presented to compute the Julian day number, day of the week, and modified Julian day number for any Gregorian calendar date. The inverse problem of recovering the Gregorian calendar date from a known Julian day number is also presented. Basic astronomical applications are discussed as well as the precision requirements.
