What is the relationahip of the 2009 International Year of Astronomy (IYA) and the Sun-Earth Connection? The science of the Sun-Earth Connection, more formally called Heliophysics, is the study of the dynamic nature of our Sun and its effect on the Solar System. Astronomy is literally the study of the stars and the Sun, as our very own star, is the ideal and most accessible candidate for detailed study. Sunspots were among the first discoveries Galileo made with his telescope 400 years ago. The discovery of these "imperfections" on the Sun helped get him in trouble with Church authorities. We are still learning about and changing our views on the many other fascinating phenomena associated with the Sun and their effects on the surrounding planets. Each year the Heliophysics community learns more about and celebrates the science being done in that community through the public event called Sun-Earth Day. The theme for Sun-Earth Day in 2009 will be the IYA, but it will be more than just a single day celebration. One of the goals of IYA is to have everyone look to the heavens through a telescope. To most people this means nighttime astronomy, but we will encourage schools, other educational groups, and the public to use telescopes and solar projection methods during the day to make their own discoveries about the Sun. Many other activities, events, and multimedia information items are planned. There will be podcasts, webcasts, student-created newscasts, distribution of thousands of folders of information, etc. The presentation will indicate the range of the plans for Sun-Earth Day 2009 and how you can participate and benefit.
