The application of individual reddening corrections has allowed the derivation of intrinsic properties for 29 long period Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds, and the temperatures of the theoretical V-B/B-U diagram are used to calibrate the temperature/color relation. The theoretical indication that, at constant period, Cepheids in their first crossing through the instability strip are brighter than in the other crossings appear to be confirmed by observations. A comparison of the observed period variations with theoretical ones shows the majority of long-period Cepheids to exhibit fluctuating periods on time scales of a few years to a few decades, with amplitudes larger than expected theoretical period variations that have been estimated for the same time scales. It is suggested that long period Cepheids move with temperature and color variations, during their course through the instability strip, that are undetectable by current astronomical techniques.
