A rigorous theory for planetary spectra, recently developed by Sobolev, is used to interpret weak absorption bands in Jupiter's spectrum. Precise values of reflection coefficient are used which have been obtained by numerical solution of the Ambartsumian nonlinear integral equation with highly elongated scattering indicatrices. Values for the methane content in the above-cloud layer and the relationship between the quantity of methane molecules and the particles in a unit of volume of cloud layer in Jupiter's atmosphere have been obtained by comparing the theory with observations of two methane absorption bands.
