The International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) is a widely used empirical, climatological model for ionospheric densities, temperatures and velocities. The model is based on a large volume of ground and space data and was developed in the framework of a joint project of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and the International Union of Radio Science (URSI). This talk reviews the latest version of IRI and discusses plans for future improvements. The model has been validated with data from a wide variety of data sources in direct and indirect comparisons. Results of such statistical studies are presented at the annual IRI Workshops and a few examples will be discussed in this talk. IRI has been used for a wide range of operational applications including ionospheric corrections for satellite altimetry, radio astronomy, and satellite orbit determination. IRI is also the ionospheric model of choice for many educators who require a ionospheric model as part of their course work and for many engineers as a background ionosphere for instrument development purposes. We will discuss a few of these aplications. The model provides a description of the monthly mean ionosphere. A more accurate prediction of the actual ionospheric conditions can be obtained by updating the model with measurements of specific characteristic parameters. In the case of the IRI electron density model F and E peak densities and heights (foF2/NmF2, hmF2, M3000F2, foF1/NmF1, foE/NmE, hmE) can be used to update the model.
