A mechanism is examined which would ensure a periodic enhancement of encounters between the solar system in galactic orbit and randomly placed interstellar clouds or supernova candidates. This mechanism involves the interaction between a galactic two-arm spiral density wave, which gives rise to the matter arms, and a numerically generated galactic orbit of the solar system. A simulation of this interaction is described which indicates that the interaction will produce a fairly complex pattern of overtaking and crossing the arms of the spiral density wave. The periods associated with encounters between the solar system and dense interstellar clouds and supernovae are found to be approximately 120 million, 430 million, and 930 million years.
